CHAPTER THIRTY

LATER, AT A MACDONALD’S restaurant, Joe pulled in beside Sally, so close to her vehicle that she could not open her door. The restaurant’s distinct odor was in the air, making her hungry. An enormous fellow waddled inside. Is that guy an overeater, or does he have a glandular problem? Some people eat too much because it’s the only enjoyment that they have left. Who knows, I could be there at some point. Just one ailment of many to the human condition.

“Are you following me?” Joe asked with a smirk. The eyes of a corpse had more life than his. His glove compartment had a big sharp knife that would open her pretty neck. “Because if you are, I must say that it is not a healthy thing to do. Know what I mean? Do you get the gist?”

She thought about pulling the Glock, but it wouldn’t be an intelligent move. Sally could not just shoot him, at least not yet. But maybe it would get there. It seemed evil ones were being placed in her path just so she could shoot them. “You are a little close to me, aren’t you? Need better driving skills? I’m not following anyone. I’m lost. Not from around these parts.”

He studied her. Joe did not like this encounter one bit. He worked using the element of surprise, which was gone with this female. Joe thought his photo should be beside the word surreptitious in the dictionary. If she even saw him again, he would feel at risk, which was an awful feeling. What would happen if she told others about him, which was probable? An inconvenient situation.

Joe reversed and made sure that she saw him memorizing her license plate before he left, and she did the same. The specter said that she was tailing him. The ghost was an unexpected encounter, and Joe was not sure what to make of it. He did a lot of glancing in his rearview mirror for the next couple of hours but saw no sign of her.

After Sally had a quarter-pounder with cheese, she drove around to see if she could locate him. After about an hour, she gave up the hunt but would never forget that face.
